Overview

A mobile commerce concept exploring two specific UX decisions that are often treated as defaults but deserve deliberate reasoning: persistent bottom navigation and distraction-free checkout.

Persistent bottom navigation

Bottom navigation persists across the shopping flow - product browse, PDP, cart - because research on thumb reach zones and task-switching patterns in mobile commerce consistently shows that anchoring global navigation at the bottom reduces user error and speeds recovery from dead ends. The study documents the reasoning behind this choice rather than presenting it as an assumption.

Search and discovery

The search entry point uses a placeholder text pattern that guides the user toward category-scoped search ('Search in Electronics...') before opening to a full search. The reasoning: scoped search produces more relevant results and shorter result sets, which is more useful on a small screen than returning 10,000 unfiltered matches.

Distraction-free checkout

Checkout suppresses the persistent bottom navigation and removes promotional elements. The logic: once a user has committed to purchase, every element competing for attention is a potential exit. The study tests this hypothesis against a version with the standard navigation retained.
